Pray for This Guy

This is my friend and pastor, Walt. He is up in Maryland, trying to learn how to preach and teach and I ask that you join with me in praying for God to raise this man up to lead and teach the Bible.

Celebrate the Incarnation

As Thanksgiving is suddenly approaching us (TOMORROW!), I thought it would be good to begin to study and enjoy the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. I'll have stuff posted sporadically and I wanted to start with this:

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th’angelic host proclaim,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Refrain

Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ, by highest Heav’n adored;
Christ the everlasting Lord;
Late in time, behold Him come,
Offspring of a virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail th’incarnate Deity,
Pleased with us in flesh to dwell,
Jesus our Emmanuel.

Refrain

Hail the heav’nly Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Ris’n with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die.
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

Refrain

Come, Desire of nations, come,
Fix in us Thy humble home;
Rise, the woman’s conqu’ring Seed,
Bruise in us the serpent’s head.
Now display Thy saving power,
Ruined nature now restore;
Now in mystic union join
Thine to ours, and ours to Thine.

Refrain

Adam’s likeness, Lord, efface,
Stamp Thine image in its place:
Second Adam from above,
Reinstate us in Thy love.
Let us Thee, though lost, regain,
Thee, the Life, the inner man:
O, to all Thyself impart,
Formed in each believing heart.

Refrain

War of Words: Getting to the Heart for God's Sake

This week's sermon is by Paul Tripp. I have benefited greatly from this man's ministry and God has used this sermon to change the way I think about language and communication. I know you will enjoy it:

War of Words: Getting to the Heart for God's Sake

Helpful Link for Healthy Living

I love the verse in 1 Corinthians: "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Cor. 10:31).

It's important for us to apply this verse to all parts of our life and not just eating and drinking. I know I have failed to honor God by eating and drinking to his glory and I think this link will help us who are wanting to change. I hope you find it useful.

Incredible!

I just finished watching a interview that John MacArthur did on Larry King and the last minute of it really stirred me up. John stated (referring to Christ's second coming:

"You want to know why he hasn't come back? It's not because he is slow in his promise, it's because he longsuffering, waiting for sinners to repent".

This is 100% true and has filled me with encouragement and delight in knowing that Jesus truly loves me and is patient with saving my friends and family that I'm praying for.

"But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." 2 Peter 3: 8-9

Stepping Back

From time to time, it's good to step back and look at your life. It's always good to examine where you are spiritually and obey the command to "make your calling and election sure." Assurance seems to be a hot topic of conversations these days and I think it's an important one.

We need to step back and focus on the gospel. Our gaze is always shifting from the gospel, no matter how often we are encountering it. Why doesn't it stay with me! Why do I have to keep preaching the gospel to myself? Why am I not seeing fruit in my life and real spiritual growth? I think these are all good questions and we need the gospel to answer them.

Jesus Christ died. His death actually accomplished something. When Jesus died, Satan, sin, and death also died with him. He conquered these things and their power was eternally shattered and limited. It's only a matter of time before Satan, sin, and death will be gone completely! In the same way that sin is loosing it's grip on our lives, every time we hear and receive the good news of the gospel, we are actually growing closer and closer to holiness! We are growing in our relationship with the Lord and there is no need to worry! Continue to go back to the cross of Jesus Christ and trust him! He is worthy to be honored and trusted and He is always there for us. Our assurance of salvation is rooted in our assurance and confidence in the death, burial, resurrection of Jesus Christ AND the finished work he accomplished on the cross on our behalf. His death actually accomplished your salvation, so lets rest in his finished work done on our behalf and joyfully obey him in all facets of our lives.

The Old, Old Story

This week's sermon is by none other than C.H Spurgeon! (He is dead, but the sermon is wonderfully read/preached)

Thesaurus Help

Another wonderful tool I'm encouraging this month is the Thesaurus. I am a college student and have witnessed student's vocabulary. We have fallen victim to redundant, slang, weak communication and desperately need change! Therefore, I have added a thesaurus gadget at the bottom, right hand side of the blog. I hope it well help you in writing, blogging and in all your other communication endeavors. Let's choose ours words wising , especially as we write and blog about our Savior!

Listening to the Word

One thing I started doing over the last few days is listening to the word of God. I have found it delightful and have enjoyed listening to the words of God that bring forth faith.

I would encourage this practice especially in light of memorizing certain texts. Hearing it over and over again will work wonders in your life and help you retain that which is true, solid food for your life.

Call to Memorize

I want to issue a challenge for all of us to memorize these 3 chapters from Isaiah:

53:1 Who has believed what he has heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men;
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
9 And they made his grave with the wicked
and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
The Eternal Covenant of Peace

54:1 “Sing, O barren one, who did not bear;
break forth into singing and cry aloud,
you who have not been in labor!
For the children of the desolate one will be more
than the children of her who is married,” says the Lord.
2 “Enlarge the place of your tent,
and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;
do not hold back; lengthen your cords
and strengthen your stakes.
3 For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left,
and your offspring will possess the nations
and will people the desolate cities.

4 “Fear not, for you will not be ashamed;
be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced;
for you will forget the shame of your youth,
and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.
5 For your Maker is your husband,
the Lord of hosts is his name;
and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer,
the God of the whole earth he is called.
6 For the Lord has called you
like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit,
like a wife of youth when she is cast off,
says your God.
7 For a brief moment I deserted you,
but with great compassion I will gather you.
8 In overflowing anger for a moment
I hid my face from you,
but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,”
says the Lord, your Redeemer.

9 “This is like the days of Noah to me:
as I swore that the waters of Noah
should no more go over the earth,
so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you,
and will not rebuke you.
10 For the mountains may depart
and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

11 “O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted,
behold, I will set your stones in antimony,
and lay your foundations with sapphires.
12 I will make your pinnacles of agate,
your gates of carbuncles,
and all your wall of precious stones.
13 All your children shall be taught by the Lord,
and great shall be the peace of your children.
14 In righteousness you shall be established;
you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear;
and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
15 If anyone stirs up strife,
it is not from me;
whoever stirs up strife with you
shall fall because of you.
16 Behold, I have created the smith
who blows the fire of coals
and produces a weapon for its purpose.
I have also created the ravager to destroy;
17 no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,
and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord
and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”
The Compassion of the Lord

55:1 “Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
3 Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
5 Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you.

6 “Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call upon him while he is near;
7 let the wicked forsake his way,
and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

12 “For you shall go out in joy
and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
shall break forth into singing,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall make a name for the Lord,
an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”
